Recently the M.Arch. Mariano Arias-Diez, director of a10studio had the pleasure of being invited to participate as a speaker at the most recent Fuck Up Nights event in Los Cabos. “FUN” as they are known, are events where respectable professionals are invited to share their stories of failures (unlike the norm in other events which is to talk about successes).
The intention of FUN is to show the learning process of professionals through their failures as opposed to learning from the successes (which rarely leave learning experiences). The FUN are events were created in Mexico City and now take place all around the world.
Recientemente el M.Arq. Mariano Arias-Diez tuvo el gusto de ser invitado a participar como conferencista en el más reciente evento de Fuck Up Nights Los Cabos, los “FUN” como se les conoce, son unos divertidos eventos donde se invita a respetables profesionistas a compartir sus historias de fracasos (a diferencia de lo normal que es ir a contar los éxitos).
La intención de los FUN es demostrar el proceso de aprendizaje de los profesionistas a través de sus fracasos a diferencia de aprender de los éxitos (los cuales rara vez dejan experiencias de aprendizaje). Los FUN son eventos que surgieron en la Ciudad de México y ahora se realizan alrededor del mundo.
Mariano focused his talk to demonstrate and emphasize how the job of the architect is a succession of failures. In his talk he showed practice examples and shared personal experiences; He shared with the audience in Cabo San Lucas, how architects learn daily from failures, assuming always that we do not have the best response to problems, but that makes us turn into observers and be open to accept the opinions of all those involved in a project, from clients, consultants, collaborators, etc., because in the end that “collective intelligence” will give us the best solution to a project.
Mariano enfocó su plática a demostrar y hacer énfasis en como el quehacer del oficio del arquitecto es una sucesión de fracasos. En su plática a través de ejemplos prácticos y de experiencias personales, contó a la audiencia de Cabo San Lucas, cómo es que los arquitectos aprendemos diariamente de los fracasos, asumiendo que no siempre tenemos la mejor respuesta a los problemas, pero eso nos hace volvernos observadores y aceptar las opiniones de todos aquellos involucrados en un proyecto, desde los clientes, consultores, colaboradores etc., ya que al final esa “inteligencia colectiva” nos dará el mejor resultado.
This result could be both success or failure. Mariano explains intelligently how the context is what conditions that a certain solution is correct or erroneous, therefore, it is difficult to find the correct answers, however, it is easy to detect the mistakes. Part of the key to find the right answers for architectural projects is have the right questions, and realize what can be improved, and always work towards that goal in the daily work of our office and our architectural projects.
Esto no significa que ese resultado sea un acierto o un error. Mariano expone inteligentemente como el contexto es lo que puede condicionar que cierta solución sea correcta o errónea, por tanto, es difícil encontrar los aciertos, sin embargo, es fácil detectar los errores, lo que se puede perfeccionar, y trabajar siempre hacia esa dirección en el trabajo diario de nuestra oficina y nuestros proyectos arquitectónicos.
Towards the end of the talk, Mariano reflects on the meaning of “success” in our times through the example of a Mongolian athlete from the ’92 Olympics in Barcelona. No doubt an interesting talk that you can see in the video found at the beginning of this post.
